My beef with Lemmy:
- It’s weighted towards politics
- Not a lot of niche sub critical mass yet (though this is not its fault at all)
- But holy moly, it’s a political purity test! Like, I think of myself as pretty socialist, way far off center, but I feel totally alone veering off certain topics or even acknowledging certain things! I’m (mostly) not getting banned, and I am not leaving, but still.
For the moment, I just don’t engage in political discussion on Lemmy. It is way to extreme for me in general. It makes sense tho that those who don’t feel their opinions fit anywhere else (or get them banned etc.) gather in a place that allows for freer discussion, which I think is a good thing really.
And also just posting about niche music makes me happier than getting angry online so… That’s been a good motivation.
I don’t have any problems being occasionally politically incorrect on lemmy. Even if you get tons of downvotes, so what?
frankly, lemmy is literally only place I have found where you can discuss politics reasonably. I also try to rid myself of any pride about being right about anything and actually look forward to being called out if someone thinks i’m wrong. Then I can take a look at what they say and adjust my own opinions if the other guy makes sense.
Though i dont go to .ml, they seem more interested in witch hunts than making anything better.
That’s probably for the best Jamie Oliver - you do have a public persona to consider.
Yeah, but at least I can make a grilled cheese unlike that other dunce Gordon
in reddit you have to walk on eggshells when your in those subs, even if your “agreeing with everyone else”, one simple misconstruement will get you banned.

The rando-ban problem on reddit is its biggest flaw. I’m afraid to submit anything there. And I generally only comment in small subs.
i did that unbeknownst they were haivng a ban wave last week, and subs upping thier spam removal filters, plus they dont like if you report too much, or report something the MODS dont like, from what ive gathered if a mod responds to your “report of another player” you are mostly getting a warning, or ban from thier subreddit, and this also it constitutes as account-wide violation once you get banned by a mod for reporting someone. and its also corroborated on the “modsupport” sub that they hate having to deal with Report abuse in general.
See, that’s exactly the kind of thing I come here for. Keep doing it!
Honestly I think your approach is closer to the ideal: it’s pretty poisonous to the mind if most of the content you take in is political in nature. You need to explore other stuff too, broaden horizons and all that.
I’ve been learning how to design parts with CAD software and 3D print it. Also got a home server going to host games and media, among other things. These hobbies keep me sane, and that’s what I’m ultimately getting at: people need to get a hobby that isn’t about being mad on the internet.
Also instead of just whining on the internet, its far more effective to engage in local politics and build up a base of people there than hoping that “someone” will do “something” about the whole country. That “someone” has to come from somewhere: create the grassroots that can be the base from which change springs.
Can I ask what resources your using to teach yourself CAD? I want to learn it as well.
MangoJelly’s FreeCAD course is great, but there are others out there too. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWuyJLVUNtc3UYXXfSglVpfWdX31F-e5S

I saw people advocating for damaging people’s Teslas and it was fucking stupid. Beyond the fact that many people are not in a position where they can just get rid of a car over political reasons, it is likely many or even the majority of Tesla owners do not vote Republican (conservatives have been much slower to adopt EVs): you’re very likely going to damage vehicles owned by totally innocent people.
I own a non-Tesla EV but either way it would be excessively expensive to switch to another car on a whim, and I sure as hell am not going to deprive my family just because seeing my car’s brand hurts people’s feelings.
I feel like 3 kinda comes with the territory of politics. The sort of people who mod political forums have more rigid ideas of what ideas should prevail in the discourse than someone modding a board for embedded electronics, not that that’s an inherently bad thing.
It just feels worse because a greater portion of Lemmy is politics; here I’ve caught bans for being insufficiently pro-Kamala months after the election or not going along with a china bad circlejerk, but at reddit people catch bans for “John Brown did nothing wrong” or just posting footage from Palestine.
Yeah. To be clear, I don’t feel “persecuted” by the administration, just the community. That’s a very important difference.
the gaza/palestine thing is very tricky, many of the subs have been infiltrated by pro-israeli mods, early on the war, they were spamming “jews are doing nothing wrong, if we jews dont destroy them they will destroy us”, i pointed out in one, where the war was instigated and started by the same person who is keeping himself out of jail in israel.

Israel has a terrible PM. But the war was started by Hamas.
Pro-zionist sentiment was definitely prevalent on here following Oct 7th. It took many months for anti-zionist sentiment to outpace it, thanks to many people debunking their misinformation and sharing articles that showed the reality that most Western Media downplayed if not ignored
On places like reddit, we mostly continue to see more and more banning of anything anti-zionist. r/Palestine might be the only place left that isn’t aggressively pro-zionist on there
on r/worldnews my whole acct was suspended for 7 days for contradicting bibi, and HAMAS, who started the war, the commentor threw a fit and made a nasty comment and reported me, sometimes you can tell who reported you by looking at your previous message.
Adi Callai has done a phenomenal analysis of the situation, The Gaza Ghetto Uprising. I highly recommend if you’re interested.
Reddit is a lost cause, seeing how worldnews was regulated to promote Zionist disinformation was enough for me to leave. I think the kind of open source and federated communities such as Lemmy have much potential. Hard to say if they will be or not when it comes to genuine organization of working class people, but hopefully it can help in some way.
I’ve caught bans for being insufficiently pro-Kamala
I talked some shit during the election and didn’t cop a ban lol. I guess you either had more visibility or were in even more extreme places than I was?
Reddit has the same issue though.
But it’s still far more political here…
It’s more politically informed, for certain.
Lemmy Leftists feel like that old Emo Philips joke at times.
Apparently anyone not wanting to live in a grey soviet tower block and have all their worldly possessions be redistributed by the state is a “fucking Lib”
People who call themselves “leftists” and hate “liberals” are almost always Stalinists or Communists. “Left” is actually a word that covers an entire spectrum of left of center: liberals, ultraliberals, and radical.
The irony is that the Stalinists are using a misleading inclusive word “leftist”, but historically Stalin and Lenin considered all the other leftist parties in Russia to be their main enemy, not people on the right. Members of these 2 leftist parties were their very first victims. All of them were killed or sent to the Gulag. And then later Stalin made an alliance with Hitler.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialist_Revolutionary_Party
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mensheviks <— this party was originally the very same party as the Bolsheviks and was the majority faction.
“Emo” is one hell of a name.
And a hell of a comedian.
It’s scary until you notice you don’t get banned for disagreeing & challenging their dumbassery (as long as you follow the rules), unlike reddit where the slightest wrong move & it’s BAN BAN BAN. Fuck that place.
It also helps to check which instance a post comes from & adjust your expectations accordingly.
It’s expected. Right now, it is becoming a safe space for political dissidence. As sentiment pools and gathers mass, things tend to get towards the polar opposites and revolt breeds more revolt. Anything less than total agreement is viewed sideways.
I got banned from the Star Trek Memes sub, or something, for very mild trolling. I don’t even remember what earned it, I think I said I can’t get my head around an animated Star Trek and can’t accept it as canon or something, and then the trolling was just me doubling down on that opinion (which is an actual opinion). People do love their fandoms.
These problems usually solve themselves as the network grows.
Lucky you… I managed to get banned once, for not being “left” enough. So I just don’t engage in specific kind of topics anymore.
i argue that there arent really any niche communities. if I see a site with slow and limited posts, and 0 comments on most of those posts, can I really call that a community? i like video games and furry stuff. the video game and furry stuff sites have next to nothing on them. apparently the only ‘geeks’ here are Linux users who only talk about Linux distros or tankies who hate everyone and everything
I mean I think those are just the people who comment on politics threads.
Why are you on Reddit, it is vile and absolutely terrible, better stay away.
Lol. Lemmy feels more like reddit than reddit.
Both of these posts are complaining about their accounts being banned, which happened because they (at least one of them) posted low effort questions and therefore got lots of downvotes and got automatically banned by a system meant to ban bots and trolls. The irony is that reddit has major problems with their automatic moderation which you yourself as an user is completely powerless to controll, e.g. recently when a massive amount of nsfw subreddits were banned for being unmoderated which they later admitted was erroneous.
I’ve noticed a rise of Bot Moderators on reddit and their AI is not very good. They pick up on certain words and not context. One banned me for 3 days for harassment but I was defending myself against someone that was being antagonistic against me. My appeal was rejected :(
It’s so weird to read this, because other than a dork messaging me saying they were going to report me to the FBI I’ve had nothing but a lovely time on Lemmy.
Ima be real everyone is kissing lemmys ass but… I mean, it feels like reddit? Which is good?
Feels no different from reddit so far lol it’s not better or worse, really
New here but so far it feels like Reddit used to feel 10 years ago - a bit less populated maybe.
The top comment on reddit is always a stupid fucking joke or pun. Not so on lemmy. That’s the biggest difference I notice when I go back to look at reddit. On popular posts the whole first 3 threads are inane bullshit.
“I also chose this guys dead wife”…
Like the inside jokes were really good on Reddit like the switcheroo one, or the guy that always had that whole comment that ended in the wrestling scene but most of them were just repeated to death
Yeah Lemmy has the user base that will dogpile you if you say something mildly upsetting
Windows 11 is the best operating system Microsoft have released in a long time, and I think it wins out on Arch Linux.
Bait used to be believable
After 5 words it was already evident that you were lying
Windows XP was the best OS ever. Then it was overtaken by any other alternative.
I never had any issues with Vista and kept it until I was forced to go to 7.
Main difference from reddit is that you don’t see the same joke repeated in every thread. And here if you comment something it’ll probably be read by at least a few people.
Those top posts on reddit are always karma farming bots
Not so sure about the jokes. I use Arch BTW…
Disclaimer: I actually don’t. I’m too lazy these days.
Thanks for the gold, kind stranger!
I find myself getting into less stupid arguments here, and it feels more active.
Same culture, less exploitation by a corporation.
Here, your comment doesn’t get completely buried if you make one on a popular post. Part of that is the lack of heavy volume, of course, but I also feel like the sorting is more favorable to less upvoted comments.
Wait till they hear about reddit
Oh no… Anyway.
Apparently there is a guy called Lemmy LMAO 🤣
yes. extremely dangerous website
Usually when there are more comments than upvotes it means that OP is getting thoroughly roasted
Nah that went away with the advent of the “proportional” scoring or whatever bullshit they called it like 10 years ago
It’s that what happened when a popular post that was ‘blowing up’ on Reddit went from 500 updoots on the front page to mediocre front-page posts regularly getting 3-4k updoots seemingly over night?
I was there, I remember the change, I can’t remember why it happened.
It was ostensibly to make it harder for advertisers to game their own posts (similar to not showing you your own posts’ scores for a set period after creation), but like everything else on that site, it’s turned into some bullshit activist mods and admins use to keep things their corporate overlords don’t like from gaining too much traction.
It’s probably Spez with a second hand account
The community could certainly be kinder.
downvoted to teach you a lesson!
(much less toxic than reddit thus far)
Joke’s on you, lemmynsfw disabled downvotes instance-wide to make a more welcoming community lol.
It still registers it, as other instances can see the downvotes.
lemmynsfw provides peril-sensitive sunglasses!
I find that showing the upvotes and downvotes on comments takes the edge off being downvoted. You can see that there is still people who agree with you.
definitely!
I thought we still operated on rediquette where we only downvote people if they’re not contributing to conversation?
I’ve never seen this part of rediquetteactualy being followed on reddit (also, it was a joke to demonstrate how this community is different because I upvoted, but someone ruined the joke)
I think you’re the first account I’ve seen from the sooner instance, hope you’re having fun over there at least
