Saying that whatever Trump does is political suicide misses the biggest issue with this election-

Nobody cares what either of them say because an awful lot of the electorate simply isn’t listening.

The Trump voters would keep voting for Trump even if he joined the Nazi party. The rest of voters have either tuned out or are pushing Kamala simply because she’s not Trump so she must be better.
An awful lot of people have just made up their minds and aren’t listening for anything new.

So having a headline that Trump says something offensive is news to nobody. What would have been political suicide a decade or two ago is business as usual today. Whatever standards we once have politicians to, we no longer hold them to.

Nothing is political suicide for Trump. He was right when he said he could shoot someone on 5th Ave and he wouldn’t lose any supporters. His followers are a cult and the only way they would stop following him is if he somehow turned brown or black.

The Madison Square Garden rally, operatic in its repulsive bigotry, will almost certainly alienate more voters who might have voted for Trump.

Will it really? Is there someone out there who didn’t know until this event that he was a bigot and an awful person and is now going to change their mind?

Honestly, I kind of get it.

I’m very attuned to keeping up with what is happening in the world, at least at a base level. The number of people I’ve met who just dont do that is staggering. The other day I ran into someone who didn’t know what happened on J6. Maybe they were playing dumb, but I didn’t think so.

The reason i kinda get it is because this shit is depressing. I would love to be able to just tune out everything political related and only see feeds relating to my hobbies and just be totally ignorant of how fucked everything is. I guess some people saw that opportunity and took it.

It’s fatigue. If there were a turd-based fireworks show outside your house every night, eventually you just have to ignore it.

At first, exploding turds, I kinda want to see that. Eventually everything is covered in shit. That’s sort of a problem. A few folks try to clean it up, but it’s A LOT of shit. Your house is covered in shit. Your car is covered in shit. You go to the car wash and things improve… But your car is covered in shit again pretty quickly, so that felt like a waste.

Then someone asks you about that one time when a bunch of people broke into a building and let off shit fireworks everywhere. Sure that was new, but the nightly turd extravaganza still went off just the same. Plus the turd fireworks are always being set off in new and unusual places. I can’t be expected to remember them all.

Yep. I’ve seen folks avoid politics like I avoid football. They excuse themselves when someone starts talking about it, they change the channel if something about it comes on, and they just don’t go to places on the internet where it’s discussed.

I wasn’t ever that bad, but I used to not go out of my way to look at politics and it was pretty easy to avoid. I was much happier as well. But it’s important so I wade through it.

It’s always so interesting (or heartbreakingly depressing) for me to hear this. I have seen that to some extent where I live, although very tepidly. However, when I go visit friends and family in much more red areas I feel like I’m going into bizarro world. People are doubling and tripling down. It’s like a weird arms race or something between trump and his sycophants as they desperately try to keep up with each other in terms of bigotry and just overall insanity and/or stupidity. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that, in those areas, they ate this stuff up and asked for seconds.

It would make me incredibly happy if this was some sort of breaking point and it actually did open some eyes but having been there and seen the countless gigantic trump/Vance flags hanging from the bed of outrageously lifted pickups, I just don’t see it.

    • Yeah, the “political suicide” bit is immediately questionable. The fact that this race is even close has destroyed any remaining shreds of faith in my fellow Americans.

Trump could go up in stage and rant about black people, using the hard-R; he could repeat the sexist comments he’s already famous for; he could probably even criticize Christians - none of it would move the needle. People voting for him aren’t doing so because they think he’s a great person; they’re doing it because they hate liberals.

I think they are voting for him because of the things they believe he is or stands for. Let’s assume some people cherish kindness, then these people believe he is kind even if he’s obviously not. They want to believe.

They are analogously not voting for Harris out of what they believe she stands for: destroying their values, installing communism, surrendering to the Soviet Union, all on day one. Because they want to believe.

Holy nonsense false equivalence, Batman. Harris’s net worth (with her husband), is about $8 million, much of which comes from book sales, pensions, and the value of her home. I’ll take the millionaire who earned her assets via public service, investment, and work over the supposed billionaire who earned his assets via loans from daddy, grift, fraud, lies, and a history of refusal to pay bills.

In all this voting third party is the crazy choice because?

The average net worth of a single person in their 60s (kamala’s age) is about 1.5 million.

So take 8 million for Kamala and husband and 3 million for an average couple in the same age group.

I think that’s significantly closer than any of the gop or third party candidates.

Besides, it’s not like Kamala is trying to make it a secret (unlike trump, who consistently refuses to release documents related to wealth and assets)

Yes, we should watch for and be ready to react within the law to fake elector schemes, collaborating with hostile foreign interests, inciting coups and violence, etc but if we do, there’s fuck-all he can do about it. Trumpism dies with his political career. In the final stretch, let’s reject him with so many votes they can’t possibly claim another “stolen” election!

My concern is that Trump is defeated in the election, declared is stolen, and we do react within the law to fight it, but Trump is declared President by the House of Representatives and the Supreme Court anyway. Once Project 2025 starts rolling out as policy, how many of us are then willing to start reacting outside of the new law? Most Germans were not fervent supporters of the Nazi party. They just didn’t want to get in trouble with the ruling government. Are you willing to risk your life to fight the fascists? Are you willing to risk the lives of your family? Or do you learn to survive with your head down and not make waves…

Not calling anyone out for anything, but I often have to wonder about how I would react now that it keeps getting closer to reality.

He can lose, repeatedly. But that doesn’t really end Trumpism. It just mutates the brand into Republicans who can pitch themselves as “winners”.

A big problem with Lincoln Project Republicanism is that it doesn’t refute the fundamental fascist tenants of Trumpism (the xenophobia, the white nationalist Christiandom, anti-Democratic sentiments). They just pitch Trump as on the wrong side of foreign policy (not hawkish enough on Russia or China).

So we end up with Trump on one end and Ted Cruz on the other, as our range of conservative options.

In fact I’m not sure where the Republicans could fall back to ideologically.

At the heart of every Republican is a British Tory who desperately wants an American King.

Ever since the Dixie Flip they’ve pretty much built their entire party around racism and religious extremism.

Republicanism, even back to Lincoln, was a theory of Industrial expansion. Modern Republicans simply have nowhere else to expand into.

Racism and religious extremism are about re-colonizing the interior a second time, with a smaller and more “pure” cohort of settlers.

But without the large locus of dense population like the party had when it was dominant in the metropoles, that’s increasingly difficult to accomplish.

What the GOP needs is a new Mecca (or, perhaps, a New New York). A large, population dense center of power to expand out of again. Maybe they’ve found that in Salt Lake City. Maybe they’ve found it in the increasingly right wing Texas capital of Austin. Or in Silicon Valley. Or in Tel Aviv. Maybe they’ll rediscover New York (Eric Adams and Andrew Cuomo certainly suggest fascism still plays well in the Big Apple).

But Settler Colonialism 2 is the dream.

That’s an interesting way to look at it. I’m not sure they need a single city though, the analogy kind of falls apart if you take it too far. But the whole restricting voting rights to white Christian men married with kids could certainly be described as a new form of colonialism. It’s essentially apartheid, and that was an outgrowth of colonialism.

It wasn’t the rape charges, or saying he wants to fuck his daughter, or saying immigrants are eating pets, or that people are getting abortions at 9 months, or trying to build that stupid fucking wall, or banning Muslims, or botching covid, or the insurrection, or calling on proud boys, or having meeting with Putin, or having meetings with Netanyahu, or…

I will continue to say, and I mean no disrespect to you or anyone else who opposes this shitstain, the fact that he was President once and is very likely to be President again speaks volumes on who the American people are and it’s not nice.

A large chunk of you think this man is a good representation of you on the world stage. Someone who is weak, overweight, obnoxious, loud, a bully, sexist, racist, I can go on. This is who a large chunk of Americans feel best represents them.

Of course. I have always found it astonishing that anyone can behold DT and think he should be in charge of the country. Of course, same for Limbaugh or all the people in Fox who act like disingenuous assholes nonstop.

People are products of their environment.

A majority of this country did NOT vote for him. He never won the popular vote. He only won because assholes who crafted our systems of power did so to better serve the rich.

We are overweight because of our terrible deregulated food industry filled with garbage and our lack of walkable living spaces in most places Americans live. Hardly any place can be gotten to in the country with out a car.

We are uneducated because the rich have shaped our education system to remove any word about the Pullman Strike… about the original meaning of red-neck… about the bombing of Tulsa… as none of those things serve capital’s interests. So many Americans are angry because members from both major parties (with a few notable exceptions) mostly serve capital, which has allowed people’s material conditions to have worsened to a point that has ripened these same poorly-educated people for demagogues offering them easy scapegoats to shift the blame for their plight.

You can be angry, but to blame Americans for this is as if we have had much say kind of ignores what’s been happening here since at least Reagan’s time, if not longer.

Donald Trump could walk around NYC naked and shrieking the n word and he wouldn’t lose a single follower from his base. He’s s got a cult of personality around him that is basically indestructible.

It seems that is what he’s committed to. There isn’t much talk of policy anymore from anyone on his team. They’re going all in on explicit xenophobia and transphobia and so on for this final stretch.

If he wins I swear I’m going to post a collage of these moronic article titles claiming gg ez a week before elections.

    Feels 1:1 like 2016.

The headline was stupid and it doesn’t match the article. The article was not nearly as categorical, And said that the points in the speech are red meat for his base but likely to turn off undecided voters
