Today’s game is some more Max Payne 2. I was kind of dreading doing the Construction Site again, as last time it was a struggle. Surprisingly though it was a easy time. I guess my experience from my first play through carried over and made this a cake walk. I found this room full of explosives and a pile of chairs. I let myself have a little fun and detonated it and watched the chairs fly away. I took some damage from it but it was well worth it.

In the main lobby area i also platformed over to the other side of the broken bridge. I was hoping it’d be a shortcut. It wasn’t. But i did get a screenshot for bragging rights that i did something utterly meaningless. it only took a whole of 10 minutes. It was a cozy little area to hang out though.

The sniper section was a bit of a challenge with Mona because i started with a lot less weaponry than i was used too. Once i picked up a arsenal though from the enemies it became easier. With the level design though i get the feeling i should have been using the sniper more. I was paranoid though that i’d run out of ammo though so i didn’t use it for anything out of protecting Max.

When Chapter 3 started i decided that was a good stopping point for today. I remember going through Part 3 fast, so i want to stop and appreciate it this time. Plus i don’t really remember much except for the Escort Mission and the Mansion one.
In can still hear the voice of Jonathan Davis saying “Max Payne” in a Russian accent
It lives rent free in my head and will just pop in occasionally
Haven’t played ‘Max Payne’ in twenty years, completely forgot what it looks like in-game, and still the first thought from the screenshot was “Max Payne”.
Both the games have really iconic art styles (and i’m sure the silhouette of Max gives it way too)
Dunno about the artstyle: a lot of 90s to early-2000s 3d shooters had that grimy look, perhaps to show off the textures. But the jacket and the casually lowered gun definitely factored into the recognition.
I might be a bit biased too with the art style. My first playthrough was only last year and it’s really stuck with me. But yeah, the jacket and gun are definitely factors
Oh crap. Reminds me that for some reason or other (Mostly just time issues I guess, and because dualbooting Windows was pain I guess) I never completed Max Payne 2. As a giant fan of the first game I loved it.
Wonder if I need to go dig out the discs. Wait wait what, I already have MP1&2 on Steam? How? When did I get them? Never mind. Hope these aren’t a massive headache to get running
I was able to get it running on Linux pretty easily. There’s some issues with widescreen (stretching) there’s an easy fix with that using the
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8=n,b"command and a patch though (or you can put up with it like i did for my first playthrough)
This is making me want to replay this game. I don’t really remember much about the story of this one, but I do remember than the slow motion mechanics were much better than those of the first game.
