  • That entire article is based off coincidental reasoning, and does nothing to connect the review bombing (which did occur) to anything incel or right wing.

Yes, it’s absurd that the Acolyte’s audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes dropped to below the Holiday special or any other piece of Star Wars media faster than any other piece dropped, but that article itself calls out the most likely reason: people believing that the third episode was retconning the canon of Anakin’s “virgin birth” making him the chosen one by implying the twins were also “virgin birth” force babies.

That’s kind of a massive, setting breaking retcon, if that was in fact what the show was saying (which still seemed to be the implication as of the end of the series). I can understand why that would draw more ire from fans than any other new piece of Star Wars media under Disney. No outside agitators needed.

  • Yep, these scenes are either meant to be titilating, and are hamstrung by the rating to be “softer” so what is the point, or meant to convey things about character relationships, where usually a fade to black gives you enough for plot.

Like I can understand the desire to see a character or actor/actress nude, but still. Therecs better ways to do “eyecandy”, better ways to titilate, and better ways to convey plot and character development even working with the topic of intimacy.

There are incredibly few sex scenes in non-porn media that are actually done well enough to be worth it. Just go watch some porn and have a wank, or find a better writer to convey your plot and characters so you don’t need the sex scene crutch.

  • Not upset, just thought it needed to be said.

It seems odd to expect people to realize this is largely addressing issues in mastodon when it is posted to Lemmy and the summary uses terms that are interchangable. Most people are not going to take the time to follow the link if they have a negative reaction to the summary.

In short, the summary is very easy for people to take as some sort of attack on the places they personally spend time in on the fediverse as lacking. I don’t think most people look around on Lemmy and see evidence of what is being addressed as though it is an all encompassing problem, and so you get knee-jerk downvotes and that’s the extent of the engagement.

  • I think examples might serve people better in this regard. It can be hard to accept things as real that you’ve never experienced, and don’t fit with your lifetime of experiences, purely on faith alone.

Edit: I realize this is the exact opposite of “just accept other people have different experiences”, but it’s hard to deny that this is something a lot of people have trouble with in a lot of aspects of life. Expecting people to just override the natural state of viewing the world through their own personal lens is always going to be a hard ask.

People asking for examples are not always trying to find ways to tear other experiences apart. Sometimes they might need examples to help them understand better.

  • My guy, internet memes used to come in all sorts of forms. This whole “impact font on an image background” came slightly later, and exploded into more mainstream with the “advice animals” memes.

Desu, so I herd u liek mudkips, the game… Has Anyone Really Been Far Even as Decided to Use Even Go Want to do Look More Like?

Youngins! Get off my digital lawn!

    Alternatively, “normies get out! REEEEEEE!”

And if you go with the dictionary definition of meme, it’s just a kind of virally spreading idea.

  • Crowdstrike is not owned or in any way in a business relationship with Microsoft, offers the software that caused the issue for Mac and Linux as well, and in fact caused similar issues on specific Linux Distros a few months before this recent cock up.

The issue only effected Windows OS machines that were running the Crowdstrike Falcon endpoint protection software, which runs at ring 0, kernel level. This presents the same potential for causing boot loops in all OSes due to the nature of running software that deep into the guts of things. The only caveat is that some Linux Distros have separation preventing things from running at that low level, and apparently so does Mac OS.

The update was not pushed out through Microsoft, as many are incorrectly repeating. It was a malware definitions update which was downloaded automatically by the Falcon software itself, without any configuration options available for admins to stage and do partial rollouts for testing.

Also, I significantly doubt that any company is going to do a complete overhaul of its IT architecture to switch over to a new OS for end user devices, when the simplest solution is to just switch to a different endpoint protection software. I’ve worked half a decade in an enterprise architecture type position, that simply isn’t how things work in this world.

  • Man, Gmod must have changed a lot. I mainly played shortly after the first paid version released, and if noclip was enabled on a server, no one gave a shit if you used it. It was disabled by the admins or addons when you weren’t supposed to have it, like for specific maps or game modes.

This was also before just anyone could just easily host their own server though, so I guess there’s probably a lot more people who don’t know how to use the admin tools properly now.

  • On the highest level, they have a constant firehose of as much audio data from a sea of customers as they wish.

Send it to cheap overseas transcribers, use it to train and improve voice recognition and automatic transcription.

Have a backchannel to television viewing and music listening patterns.

Know when different customers are home or not, improving demographics data.

Know what is discussed within the house for data on ad penetration/reach, brand awareness, and better advertisement targeting.

It’s not a direct data to money pipeline, but having an always on listening device in someone’s home nets you a ton of useful data as an online retailer and advertiser.
