  • CNN changed ownership a while back and it’s had a clear impact on their bias and reporting standards. Giving a voice to the “far right” was a final straw of my “trust but verify” stance I had with them before that change.

Obviously I don’t trust Fox, OAN (do they still exist?), InfoWars or any of the similar ilk at all. Thats not to say that I write off everything right wing, but there isnt many that pass muster in the US ATM.

There’s also a handful of “left” publications that I dismiss offhand due to a history of sensationalism and bad perspectives.

The majority of news is a “trust but verify” stance with me (using a secondary media outlet). It’s not a straight “this news source is credible” stance, but whether or not they have a history of news that is overtly biased, sensationalized, or mis-reporting. And then there’s the individual article itself.

  • It’s usually a slow trickle of slighted information that resonates with somebody until they’ve flipped to a view/position contrary to their own interests manipulated by a foreign actor. It’s why your previous posting behavior was received so negatively, as you were tripping the “trolldar” of many individuals as it seemed you were posting with a “hidden” agenda. Which I have to say, while I don’t always agree with you, your recent posting behavior and approach to discussions is no longer tripping my internal warning klaxons.

But an even bigger example is Q-Anon, where there was a slow trickle of info that slowly worked it’s way into so many susceptible individuals.

  • Lemmy is immune to this, right? Riiiight?

With the knowledge/reports that this was going on by Russia in the 2016 election (reports dropped during the election cycle) with suggestions that other countries were likely doing the same, I am not surprised. Hell, it was exposed that even the Trump campaign had their own “grass roots astroturfing troll farm” division.

It’s made me incredibly skeptical of posters. But it’s not too hard to spot potential trolls. I’m also sure there’s those that operate in a far more subtle way that even my skepticism doesn’t capture.

I wish the communities here had better rules in place to mitigate this. But the rules tend to lean towards “benefit of the doubt” instead of a harder line on dis-incentivizing this from happening throughout our moderated communities. Maybe part of that is a limitation of Lemmy MOD Tools, but another part is definitely a lack of stronger definitions and enforcement of disallowed behavior (bad faith arguments) and enforcement of those rules.

  • Helpful tip:

For quotes you can use the following formatting:

    > Again after a blank line/new paragraph.

    Which would produce

The next day, with the deadline to qualify for the Arizona ballot just hours away, Brett Johnson, a prominent Republican lawyer, and Amanda Reeve, a former GOP state lawmaker, made house visits to each as they tried to persuade both to sign new paperwork to serve as West electors.

Johnson and Reeve work for Snell & Wilmer, which has […]

  • After getting laid off last year (big tech worker with outstanding yearly reviews) , I had a service that my former company paid for that helps people prep for a job search after getting laid off.

I, like you, had this out dated assumption as well goong into the meetings with that service. They strongly advise people to go with 2 pages, if enough relevant experience exists, with custom tailoring for each job role, to ensure you’re hitting the key words and other data points the resume scanners are looking for. They came to this conclusion using data from said resume scanning services on passing resumes

Shit has changed a lot in the last 3-5 years. And I can only imagine it’s gotten worse over the last 14 months since I landed my job (Sr level) and modern LLMs have been integrated into the scanning services.

  • All the data I’ve seen in the last 5-10 years suggests that we don’t have enough homes. Even with vacant homes accounted for and how much burden that would relieve.

That’s one of the reasons why there’s a growing push to bring back the missing middle housing and businesses into our population centers by removing zoning laws that got rid of them in the first place.

That’s not to say that we shouldn’t also be doing away with corporate ownership of housing and taxing individuals with 3/4+ homes, especially if they’re vacant.

We need a multi-pronged attack on resolving the housing issue, including the 3m planned homes from a Harris admin.
