You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: Deezer, the music streaming service, is owned by a company whose Founder and CEO is a Russian Oligarch with connections to the Kremlin and donates to the American Republican party.
2·2 months agoQobuz
For anyone checking this thread in the future. Qobuz does seem to be the only one not owned by demons. Deezer’s owner was personally sanctioned by Ukraine for his support of the invasion, Spotify pays artists incredibly poorly (and is partially owned by Tencent and Black Rock), Tidal’s largest shareholders are investment banks and Black Rock, and Napster is owned in-part by Live Nation.
Ugh.

62·6 months agoOther fun library facts:
- If you don’t like leaving the house, lots of libraries let you sign up for a card online
- In addition to books, they usually have ebooks and audiobooks online, as well as DVDs and CDs at your local branch
- You should visit your local library and see if they have other things…some have video games, or kitchen/cooking equipment, there are often classes or presentations, all free

10·8 months agoAnd most of these “left” shows are basically DNC mouthpieces who hate anyone to the left of them (looking at you Cenk)…shows how hard it is to grow an audience without being backed by --and thus narrative driven by --corporate interests.

41·8 months agoIt’s so they can track you better.
If you’re in the US and using a Chromium based browser, so long as you don’t view “adult content” they usually don’t pop this up.But they can’t track in Firefox, and because of GDPR, they can’t track logged-out users in the EU, so it’s all about the money. I use Vivaldi and a VPN to watch youtube, works mostly fine.EDIT: Well never-fucking-mind…this strategy has worked for me without fail for a lonnnnng time, and today they got me…same day the pulled uBlock origin from the Chrome store…dicks.

What the heck. Half a billion in microtransactions for a game that (according to this article) sounds like a real turd of a user experience. I loved GTA 3 and Vice City back in the day…I got GTA 4 in a Humble Bundle, haven’t spent much time with it yet. Anyone know if it’s a decent experience for a solo, offline, lootbox-free experience?

59·10 months agoAs an old person who only kinda knew that lootboxes exist, this series was a huge eye opener to the insane amount of money and industry that has emerged around them. 10/10 would recommend to my fellow olds.
Now to head back to Bioshock where the only cost to looting boxes is that I might get attacked by a splicer.
