We have speed limits for a reason, why does everyone insist on ignoring them? Serious question, as I live in a mountainous area and cars are constantly crashing because people insist on speeding. The roads are winding and narrow with lots of traffic and wildlife, so you never really know what’s around the bend.

For my use, it actually cost less to use B2 than the home backup product. The bulk of my data is Linux isos so I’m not really worried about losing it.

I do use ZFS and I just backup the files with restic. To restore a file in a zfs snapshot I would have to download the entire thing to a spare HDD, even if I only need to recover a few files. Restic has snapshots too and is designed to be used with cloud providers like B2.

I’ve used backblaze b2 for almost 8 years now and it just works. I’ve never had any data lost by them in that time.

I just recently switched over to Storj.io as it a bit cheaper at only $4/TB as compared to B2 at $6/TB. Both are S3 compatible and work with just about every backup software out there. I have used Borg, Kopia and now Restic to do backups of important data. All 3 tools deduplicate all your data and reduces the amount of storage used. They also do encryption client side and are open source. They also have a built-in verification mechanism that checks the data is intact.

Works great. Setup a month ago and imported over 600 documents, both digital and scanned. Makes backup a lot easier too as everything is in one place now.

The easiest way is to setup tailscale on the server, then share the server with the web interface. Your friends/family simply install the tailscale client, login, and it just connects like magic. No port forwarding or firewall configuration required. There’s plenty of how-tos out there.

I personally don’t believe in copyright. Nobody should be able to own an idea or data and be able to tell me what i can and cannot do with said 1s and 0s, which is what digital media is. I will find other ways to support artists and creators like going to concerts, donating or buying merchandise etc… You can’t steal data because nobody owns it to begin with in my view.

Anything confidential should be kept encrypted or offline of course.

If you’re getting protonmail anyway the bundle is worth it. You can use their client software or native wireguard. I personally use AirVPN, run by an activist group. Their website isn’t shiny, but the VPN works great and has port forwarding which is really good for torrent connectivity.

I don’t think with the Swiss privacy laws governing Proton you don’t have to worry about them ratting to Comcast

You do know where that cash back is coming from, right? Everything you buy has credit card fees baked into the price. The business pays anywhere from 1-5% on every transaction to accept your payment, and a small percent of that is returned to you as “cash back” rewards. Its why I’ve switched back to using cash and any coins I get as change go into a jar. That earns much more than %10 “cash back”, and some shops even make the customers pay the CC fee here in aus so I get a small “discount” too.

We were first in line because the US government paid billions to fund the R&D to get the vaccine out. Then when manufacturing started in limited supply it went to the highest bidder first, which again was the US. We paid for it twice . I think that kind of thing should not be patented, we the people paid for the research and development, and the pharma companies got all the profits. If other companies and countries were allowed to manufacture the vaccines, we would have squashed COVID much faster.

I just cancelled Spotify and switched to Tidal a few months ago exactly because of shenanigans like this. I was getting popups to look at recommended eBooks that I had to buy.

That was it for me and I cancelled immediately. Between the ads and the countless bugs and issues I had while using their app, glad I made the change. Been a premium member with Spotify for almost 10 years.

Austrian? I think you mean Australian there mate! Trucks are much heavier, UTEs are what you Yankees call “trucks”. It’s a UTE because it’s a utility vehicle and used by tradies and farmers and the like.

At least in the US, zoning laws and parking minimums have really restricted the ability of cities to build more housing in high demand areas. Look at how much space is wasted just for surface parking lots in downtown Denver, Houston, Austin, etc… Name almost any bigger city and soooo much valuable land is wasted on cars.

I also agree that real estate should not be used as an investment. If there was more restrictions around owning property in cities, that would certainly help. AirBnB/short term rentals are definitely not helping and should be heavily regulated/taxed.

I’ve just recently setup an immich server and it’s working great. The mobile syncing works and updates are coming very frequently. Makes a great drop in replacement for Google photos. It even has a memories feature now.
