I think voting should be as what was originally set out by Reddit; I don’t know if it’s still in their guidelines. The voting system indicates the relevancy of the contribution and whether it adds to the discussion or not. Spam and off-topic contributions gets shoved to the bottom and everything else rises to the top.

Obviously most people on Reddit these days use it as a like/dislike, agree/disagree voting system as well.

Does Lemmy instance owners and community mods ban people for having a different opinion that’s so benign?

Some Reddit mods attempt to be authoritative and ban people who hold different opinions to themselves. I know I have and I stay out of subs that relate to politics, the news, and anything divisive really.

I’ve been curious about going alone on the Fedi but I’ve always been concerned about data storage. How much drive space do you think is required? I presume it accumulates over time.

I find it weird that they upload content to their own servers even when you provide them with an external link.

Or they could just compression for their PNGs. PNG is a lossless format so they’ll only lose a fraction of a second during creation.

The cross posting was annoying because there was a lot of it and there was no engagement. I’d prefer a few submissions with actual engagement than a ton of ghost town submissions.

It’s not in the interest of Reddit to permanently ban you from their website. They lose advert money and they lose actively monthly users numbers which affect their stock prices.

Unfortunately people don’t see voting systems as a method to highlight the relavency of a contribution. They see it as a like/dislike system, and so I see as shut up signal used by most because downvoting a contribution buries it to the bottom where few people will see it.

If it was used for relevancy and quaility then communities would be self regulating by the users. I believe Reddit’s guidelines state(s/d) it’s voting system was meant to be for relevancy, even though most people use it as a like/dislike system.

Who says the ISP isn’t blocking ports via a firewall?

I thought it was common practice for ISPs to block certain ports for residential connections?

I have a friend who’s in the computer repair business. He uses PNY drives because out of the hundreds he’s installed, he’s yet to see one come back with a faulty drive, unlike some of the other brands he’s tried like Kingston. He gets the base size and base speed drives as his customers tend not to use a lot of data.

I had a friend who had a SanDisk and it also failed. I also think SanDisk thumb drives suck.

I’ve seen many Kingston drives at work fail, which I think is interesting because their thumb drives are some of the best. Actual USB 3 speeds and built well.

I had one around 2012-2013 and it failed on me. I had issues with it throughout its life but I didn’t realise it was the drive until I upgraded to a Samsung.

I’ve just tried it and it’s not for me.

I quite like the hidden gestures on Nova. I hide my security related apps and use gestures on certain things to bring them up. Yes, it is a layer of security through obscurity and I know the Reddit/Lemmy echo chamber says it’s a bad thing, but I respectfully disagree.
