The instance I’m on is definitely smaller in scale and thus calls for a different approach to social media. It definitely feels like the old school forum days where you end up recognising usenames, I wouldn’t be surprised if a year down the line we end up setting up an irl meeting between active members.

On the other hand, it’s definitely hard to break bad habits, and having been on reddit for years, I still find myself having to fight some learned behaviour (doom scrolling, opening the app when I just closed it seconds ago, wanting to post a snarky comment to someone who’s clearly wrong instead of trying to be nice and explanatory…)

I wouldn’t say that leaving centralised platforms for the fediverse is a “lesser evil”, because the fediverse is what you make of it, you still have some control if you’re techy enough. But I do think it take extra voluntary self change to have a better approach to social media, and the fediverse isn’t a solution to that in itself.

Exactly, so I’m pretty sure a professional photographer knows which way to orient a photo to share their vision, when Eliott Erwin crops a picture of a dog with its owner, it’s not at random, there are deliberate choices made before publishing, the photographer could have taken a picture of the subject on their left side, and reversed the picture to show them walking towards the right to achieve whatever vision they had

My current phone (late 2022) cost me 700€, I will never spend that much again. It was supposed to replace my main camera for photography while hiking (weight being a huge factor), and it has. President =/= Prime minister in France

The president is elected during the presidential elections, he then appoints (a nomination) his prime minister, who will be the head of the government, and in turn nominates his ministers.

It is common (but not the law) to appoint a prime minister that is from the party that has the parliament majority (through parliament elections that happen after the presidential elections)… Or whenever the president dissolves the parliament prompting new parliament elections. This is what happened here after the results of the European elections).

If the parliament disagrees with the nominated prime minister, they can hold a “No confidence vote” which forces the nomination of a new prime minister if it passes. So it’s not easy to be prime minister because you have to be “accepted” by the parliament. iirc last year the left tried 3 times to vote a no confidence in the previous prime minister, and was very close to succeed every time.

Usually the president is in charge of international affairs, and the prime minister of the national affairs, but we french have a hard on for king-like figures of state, so the president is kind of seen as the most important person in the government. The prime minister is mostly just his lap dog, a yes man that follows his orders 🥲
