  • Used to work in digital design. By pure happenstance the foundational initial team on a major project was all women and we recognised that wasn’t a good balance in terms of external perception but also in terms of getting different perspectives on design approaches.

We managed to recruit some great blokes, but they were hard to find. So many of the new dudes didn’t work out because it was so obvious how inferior they perceived us women to be. Very few of them had the skills to warrant any level of arrogance, let alone full blown superiority complex.

    It was disappointing.

  • Wounds heal poorly for smokers. People who smoke after getting a tooth extraction can get dry socket.

I know someone who ate some rancid food, and was subsequently very, very unwell because they literally couldn’t taste or smell that it was off.

It affects your cardiovascular health so good luck outrunning danger.

Everything is worse if you smoke, in real time and in terms of what it does to your body’s ability to heal or respond to trauma.

Don’t smoke. And if you do, try and quit.

  • In the, admittedly terrible, movie Moonfall (2022) they use his tech and one of the main characters keeps saying things like “God I love Elon”. I guess it was under development in years previous but we long knew that he was a babyish edgelord (see behaviour over the rescue of the Thai soccer team in 2018).

Seems shortsighted to make him such a focus.

  • It’s really obvious when they’re having a go at cisgender white women about makeup or certain clothes or haircuts or body types. You always see the same comments explaining to women that they ackshually prefer ‘natural looks’ or less revealing clothing or long hair or ‘something to hold on to’.

It’s all through a lens of ‘why do you make choices about yourself that don’t improve your appeal to me, someone who wants to fuck you’.

That there are women that completely reject all those notions or don’t seek their opinions (women who are trans, women who aren’t hetero, women who reject traditional feminine looks, women who excel in their careers or physical sports) simply doesn’t compute with these people’s view of what women are.

The more malicious parts of that mindset lead to that push you’re talking about. We as women are still just something that needs to validate its existence. Any deviation from that is viewed as something that should never have existed at all.

  • It’s so funny how upset it makes the free speech absolutist, ‘lol triggering leftist snowflakes, fuck your feelings’ types.

It’s the online equivalent of going to sit next to someone on the bus and then pausing to look them up and down, grimace and side eye someone else like ‘are you seeing this shit?’ and sitting somewhere else.

It genuinely seems to hurt their feelings and that makes me happier than it should. I think it’s the schadenfreude for those who spend their lives saying horrible, hurtful things about minorities and the vulnerable actually experiencing even 5% of the feeling.

    Really warms the cockles.

  • I’m an insomniac and the news came through while most of my country would be asleep. There’s been news I’ve woken my sleeping partner up for, because it’s been historic or 'in the run '.

Jan 6 was one of those days.

This wasn’t. And yeah it had just happened and then the event was over so, nothing really ongoing. But I literally read what I needed to about it and moved on.

On reflection, America has used up all my sense of surprise, and I’m ashamed to say, compassion for them.

I watched Sandy Hook unfold and cried. I remember that day. But the many, many that came after? Just another headline.

I’m not hyper focused on the news; there’s plenty going on in my country of interest or more relevance to me.

But I think it’s odd that the attempted assassination of an American President in my lifetime… Just isn’t surprising or interesting to me. I just have a ‘well that tracks for that place’ attitude. Putin? Now that would be something.

  • No, guns are for maiming and killing living things. I didn’t grow up in the bush or in a rural area, so there was no need to shoot anything.

Had my parents raised me around guns in suburbia then I would have categorised them as reckless fuckwits.

Because who in their right mind keeps guns anywhere near children? That’s absurd. To think that’s normal is institutionalised, cult-thought.
