Agreed. There is a snobbery to Apple.

They (my inlaws) are all on apple and they get these $2k+ Macs and they do less on them than I do on my non-apple laptop that I got refurbished for a few hundred, but I get a definite sense from them that non-apple products are beneath them.

One of the older family members sends emails and occasionally looks something up online. She often has to hunt down her Mac because she hasn’t used it in a couple of weeks. When she needed to replace it, I suggested something like mine and she got quiet and changed the subject. The next week she was telling me about her new Mac. It cost a fortune, but she didn’t tell me that, to her credit.

They all have iPhones too as if anything less would mean they were in a slightly lower class. I love them or I’d tell them to pound sand.

The person who downvoted you hasn’t experienced this snobbery. It exists though.

I had an older relative who thought that because my bubble was in green that she was being charged to see it.

Yes, I can look up a specific community if I know what it is and I can browse for communities also, but the current browsing method wrecks my brain because I’m neurodivergent.

I guess a good analogy would be suggesting to a low-vision person that they should face the screen. I can see it already, but it’s blurry and I’m asking for help to zoom in.

As long as you’re here, do you have a suggestion for a community? I’m definitely looking for interesting, niche spaces.

What do you suggest for browsing? I think there are 20k+ communities. I know there’s something brilliant out there that I wouldn’t think to look for by itself.

My philosophy on downvotes:

If I don’t agree with someone here, I upvote anyway. Not because I’m a Pollyanna, but because I’m happy they’re here and supporting Lemmy by posting and commenting. I really want Lemmy to stay up and stable for a long time and provide what Reddit used to provide for the wider community. Reddit still does, but hopefully we can too. I’m talking about political and health issues.

If it’s a mean comment, I do nothing and move on.

If something is just messed up, that’s a message for the mods. I’ve messaged once so far. Someone posted information about a person (image and real-life contact info) and said they were performing cosmetic surgery on puppies. The image was of the person flipping the bird, so it was clearly made as a hit piece. Mods got rid of it within a day.

I’m doing my part. I had two posts on Reddit. One was superniche and got 30ish points. Whatever, I was happy. It had useful info for the other people on the sub. Then I posted something to the broader community and got two downvotes in like 1 second, killing it. How did they even look at it? I think someone was sitting there gleefully downvoting every fucking thing. I never posted again.

I’ve been here since mid June and have made 264 posts, like WTF. I’m having more fun here than I ever did on Reddit and I don’t get that sick feeling I used to get from seeing all the outrage posts and mean comments (to everyone, not just me).

It’s a bot. I kept getting it too and there are identical ones for other teams.

Here’s how I blocked it. Click on the community listed next to the (bot) username. Then on that page block the community. It should be on the upper part on the right close to where it says join the community.

I had like three bot baseball communities that I blocked.

Go to youtube and watch how to make ghee. It’s quite simple. I use butter to make mine. I won’t buy expensive storebought again because it’s so cheap and simple to make.
