The mod log of their community says otherwise. People keep repeating that Vegans are being attacked, and honestly it seems to go both ways from what I’ve seen. I was curious about the situation and the single comment in this thread that stood out initially I believe has since been deleted but was literally using the word “carnivore” as a slur.

Several people are making it vegans vs carnivores here regardless of what the post was actually intended to be about. I’m not sure (since I believe this post was intended to be informative) that this comments section should even exist. But since it does I think it probably should have been limited to comments specifically about the verdict and the changes and rather explicitly excluded the hot button issue that touched all this off.

I’ve blocked the vegan community here after a single visit there and haven’t looked back but this comment section is very much tame in comparison.

This is a really good point. I haven’t really used any ultrasonic fingerprint readers so I have nothing to compare it to. I will say that on my pixel 7 it was more finicky and I had more false readings.

Nah. All these things have one thing in common. These companies are all selling a convenience. Doesn’t matter what kind, what the problems are, or what that leads to in the end. What matters is they can sell consumers the convenience of a task or product. It’s why plastic is so popular, why block chain and IoT, air travel, and AWS are so prevalent, and why large grocery chains took off and have kept on going.

Is it good for the environment? No. Is it good for the people who use the products or services? No, most of the time it’s not. But it’s convenient and coupled with the practice of keeping most regular humans so busy they don’t have time for just about anything, it’s a recipe that works. If it were about destroying the environment people would never have made any effort to clean it up anywhere in the world. It’s unfortunate but true. The internet is just the same. It rose in popularity due not to how beneficial it was to the world for spreading knowledge. But because it was convenient. And until it became convenient to get and use, it wasn’t popular nor was it particularly cost effective.

These companies will sell things at a loss repeatedly if they think they can hook people in the convenience of the thing and parlay that into better profits. And they’re really good at it.

I would imagine that different people use their phones differently. At work I use my phone mostly for picture documentation which I use frequently but with a shortcut. So I don’t have to unlock my phone all the time and when I do I’m usually wearing gloves so I’ll use the pin instead of the fingerprint reader anyway. As a result very rarely am I using the phone when my fingers are wet, covered in grease or oil, etc. Cuts and burns do have a detrimental effect on the accuracy of my fingerprint sensor but they also don’t happen enough on my fingertips to be a serious problem for me. As a result, I’m not having a lot of the same problems frequently that other users who use their phones under these circumstances do.

While I don’t like the under screen fingerprint reader (getting flash banged at night by it is a problem), and I prefer the back of phone fingerprint readers we used to have, I know at least two people that have had their phone replaced repeatedly by Samsung for the side button fingerprint reader failing.

I also have a pixel tablet with the power button fingerprint reader and it’s awkward as hell especially with a case. I can’t say that I’m completely against the in screen fingerprint reader (on my pixel 8 it works pretty much all the time), but I will say I definitely have a preference for other options. The placement of the power button also means I wouldn’t be able to use it with both hands (the fingerprints from both hands), in the event that my dominant hand isn’t free or the fingerprint I normally use is damaged etc.

No worries. No it just got slow and I had problems with crashing but that could even have been windows at the time (the problems with freezing were definitely probably related to the Internet quality).

Compared to the resources it used to take chrome is absolutely a resource hog and that’s why I describe it as bloated. I wasn’t describing Firefox as bloated. But I agree with you that it was slow and a bit clunky back then which is part of the reason I moved away from it.

Yep. I actually switched to chrome back then specifically because it was faster than Firefox (which I had been using), and each tab was its own process so if one bogged down, timed out, or crashed I could just close it without losing everything. And then they made it a bloated mess and I went back to Firefox when they got their act together and opening the browser didn’t tank ram usage. There was a point where people switched to chrome because there were benefits. And now the whole browser infrastructure is just kind of garbage because Google investors need more money.

That’s totally fair. I’m the person a lot of friends and family come to for tech advice so I recommend Firefox a lot.

I do most of my computer interaction at work. But I wouldn’t use edge (or any other chromium based browser) if I didn’t have to. So I guess that’s fair.

I have to use edge at work. So do all my coworkers. Some of our front end software requires it. But at home most of my fellow techs use Firefox. And pretty much all my family and friends use Firefox. So I guess it depends on what circles you run in.

I honestly don’t know too terribly many people who don’t use Firefox (at least in my personal life).
