Asphalt is pretty amazing given the amount of wear it goes through. It’s basically infinitely recyclable, very flexible, goes down fast, and is relatively easy to work with.

Observation is all we have. There’s no indication that anything outside the solar system is different from the things inside of it. Some stars have a light spectrum very similar to our sun, which implies they are stars in similar places in their life. Others have a light spectrum that is very different.

We can use different parallax angles to determine that some stars are much further away than others. Parallax works the same at 10 miles as it does at 10 light years.

To be fair that’s a pretty recent development. Jellyfin apps for smart tvs are only just becoming stable enough for real use. Plex was the only option for a long time.

I run Lemmy, Plex, and a bunch of other services from a desktop in my basement. It works great. The Lemmy docker setup is a little finicky but works well once you get it.

Digital assistants are good for timers, turning on smart lights, and sometimes playing music. None of those things require a large language model to spit random text back at me.

There are quite a few creators who are primarily funded off patreon and release content to YouTube. I imagine a group like MCDM (Matt Colville) who has patreon, merch, crowdfunding, and products doesn’t really care about ad revenue.

On top of the many other reasons here, there’s also a pretty distinct difference between countries without a US extradition treaty and countries that won’t extradite to the US. Many countries without formal treaties will still happily hand over a US citizen trying to hide in their country. It’s literally the same argument. A virus exists that disproportionately affects a group of people. That group is uninteresting to me so instead of just saying I don’t give a shit I call it a force of nature.

We are a little special because we can conceptualize how our actions will affect the spreas of a disease. A world leader is a little more special in that regard because they can enact policy to curb disease on a wide scale.

Having the knowledge and power to help and not doing anything is a moral failing. Blaming it on nature is covering that failing with nonsense.

Its as true as saying AIDs was nature’s way of dealing with gay people. Which is to say it’s absolutely untrue and way of passing off moral responsibility to anthropomorphized concepts.

The concept is that you don’t have to politely sit quietly and listen while someone spouts hate. You are empowered and encouraged to make it stop. That doesn’t necessarily involve physical violence but it should remind you that hate can weaponize the rules of polite society and you don’t have help.
