  • My biggest concern with Epic is their insistence on kernel level anti-cheat which is just ridiculous overkill and probably being used as spyware let’s be honest. They have many ties to China’s Tencent which has a 40% stake in the company and is known to basically just be an extension of the Chinese government.

There’s also the very odd fact that just having the Epic Games Store open in the background will deplete your laptops battery life by up to 20%. Is it just horribly optimized and uses all that battery even when idling, or is it doing something nefarious in the background? We don’t know.

As for exclusives, they have bought exclusives that were mostly crowd funded from the start which is quite the kick in the teeth to the early investors that helped get the project off the ground. And there were even some exclusives that were already listed for pre-order through Steam, forcing everyone to need to get a refund.

Plus, any good will that they’ve purchased so far is just in service of making a good name for themselves. They’ve been losing around $400 million per year since 2019 just to bring in new users. They’re going to suddenly turn around and start being cut-throat as soon as they think they can.

They are not consumer friendly, they want to dictate trends in gaming. Valve is already the king of that throne and they’re fairly benevolent and have pushed trends that are good for gaming and consumers overall. I have serious doubt that Epic would be anywhere near as good for gaming as Valve has been if they should actually become profitable, and an industry leader. Especially when it’s projected that they won’t be profitable until 2027, which means they’ll need to recoup their investment of nearly $3.2 billion since 2019.

They’re probably saying that because scientific conclusions usually err on the side of caution. Plus they’re using anecdotal evidence to make their claim which is known to be unreliable. However, there’s really no other way to gather data about this except asking people or maybe sticking them in an MRI machine while they achieve orgasm which would be awkward and expensive, so it’s kind of the best we’ve got.

They can then compare cisgender orgasm descriptions to transgender orgasm descriptions and see if they match up. And despite the shaky foundation of anecdotal evidence, this is a very long term study and they used a pretty large sample size (130 participants) so it should weed out any anomalies.

It’s certainly still possible that the participants are imagining or embellishing the results, but I think the people behind the study did the best they could to gather accurate data.

  • You’re right, my mistake. I was thinking of Existential Nihilism which is a school of thought within Nihilism, but is different in it’s interpretation as I described in my original post.

Existential nihilism is the philosophical theory that life has no objective meaning or purpose… The inherent meaninglessness of life is largely explored in the philosophical school of existentialism, where one can potentially create their own subjective “meaning” or “purpose”.

… Friedrich Nietzsche further expanded on these ideas, and … has become a major figure in existential nihilism.

There are also some quotes of note in the main Nihilism Wikipedia article

Nietzsche distinguishes a morality that is strong or healthy, meaning that the person in question is aware that he constructs it himself, from weak morality, where the interpretation is projected on to something external.

As such, the self-dissolution of Christianity constitutes yet another form of nihilism. Because Christianity was an interpretation that posited itself as the interpretation, Nietzsche states that this dissolution leads beyond skepticism to a distrust of all meaning.

I think Absurdism is more what people are generally describing when they use the term Nihilism in popular culture. Here are a couple of excerpts from the same Existential Nihilism Wikipedia article I linked.

The supposed conflict between our desire for meaning and the reality of a meaningless world is explored in the philosophical school of absurdism.

With Kierkegaard, the concept of absurdism was developed, which explains the concept of humans trying to find meaning in a meaningless world.

Because I’m transgender and have personally experienced both. And yes, there is evidence to support the idea that transgender women experience the same type of orgasm as cisgender women. Here’s a long-term study into transgender orgasms: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0090429523000341

And here’s just the excerpt for the conclusion if you don’t want to read the whole article:

Our findings suggest that TW [transgender women] and TM [transgender men] experience considerable changes in several orgasm function domains after commencing GAHT [gender affirming hormone therapy]. For TW, many of these changes align with what cis-women describe for the same orgasm function domains. GAHT related changes are for the most part experienced positively by patients, and both TW and TM generally report improved overall orgasm quality and satisfaction.

  • I’m so tired of people thinking that nihilism (Nietzsche’s main philosophy for those unaware) is depressing. It’s not at all, it’s actually very hopeful and liberating. Nihilism can basically be boiled down to “nothing matters” which sounds depressing, but what it really means is that “nobody can tell you what matters from your perspective, only you can decide what matters to you”. It was considered depressing and was railed against by the public at the time because it goes against religious teaching which tells you that religion matters objectively and unquestioningly.

It’s extremely liberating even today despite religion not having a choke hold on society as much as it did during Nietsche’s time. It’s liberating because if what truly matters to you is shitposting on Lemmy, then that’s great! Go live your most meaningful existence! Enjoy yourself and be proud of your accomplishments in that field! You choose your own worldview and what matters to you, and that’s obviously a very a positive thing, it’s not depressing or morose or narrow-minded and I’m tired of people just boiling it down to “Nihilism is for depressed people”.
