Even if I would agree with your principles, this kind of comment is what is tiring for moderators to deal with at scale.
Rentlar@lemmy.cato You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that apart from not having a car and voting, the single greatest thing you can do for the climate is simply eating less red meat.73·5 days agoCan we please have a source for the YSK statement you made in the title and the graph?
I have seen data on not having kids being the biggest choice a person can make to prevent future emissions. You also didn’t mention flying less often, or not flying when a reasonable alternative exists. What is the relative impact of all of these things compared to dietary changes? Numbers on that would be helpful.

Clearly, Putin here is not interested in making it good for the country, but that his petty war has him cash-strapped and needs to forcibly ‘borrow’ his billionaire friends’ assets.

The US government flaunting its effective tyrannical control of its tech companies are, somewhat ironically, helping the EU get away from that control by being encouraged to swap to Linux and FOSS.

But the points I raised are related to despair of the Reconciliation bill passing and those climate setbacks.
Democrats’ window of opportunity to change ahead of midterms is NOW until the primaries. (I’ve said my spiel about it before in this thread)
Rentlar@lemmy.cato politics @lemmy.world•Sanders Says Every Republican Who Backed Trump-GOP Budget 'Must Pay a Price at the Ballot Box'20·10 days agoThat’s where the resistance has to last 16 to 40 months, slowing down and making people aware enough of these things:
- how unserious about budgets Republicans are
- how much they are trying to punish regular people (poor middle and moderately wealthy class),
- while also looking to use the they are spending to subsidize companies, multi-millionaires and billionaires.
Rentlar@lemmy.cato politics @lemmy.world•GOP lawmaker caught dumping Medicaid provider stock before megabill vote24·10 days agoHe got many non-budgetary provisions out from the Byrd rule, which is essentially enforcing the rules that allow the thin Republican majority to pass a budget.
But the Republican Senate also made up an accounting magic trick to pretend that a several trillion dollar budget line item has no effect on the deficit. And pretended that this is now a rule because 51 senators think this is a good idea.
Senate Democrats did virtually everything within the legislative process that they could on their own.
House Leader Jeffries did at least delay the vote for 8 hours, 44 minutes to talk about the bill, and bring it to the afternoon news cycle instead of at 4am.
Rentlar@lemmy.cato Games@lemmy.world•The EU initiative for Stop Killing Games has reached the goal of 1 million signatures!!English9·11 days agoTo address your first point. Yes it applies to other software, this initiative applies to games because the “buyer purchases a license to allow the seller to remove your purchase at some indefinite time later” practices have been most prevalent in gaming.
Extending the scope too far will bring in more opponents than allies and muddy the discussion. Getting a decisive answer here will inform laws on how other industries should be regulated in separate but parallel legislative processes.

A teenager weighs inEnglish5·11 days agoIn Scarborough, Canada where I grew up, shootings occur once every few years at the malls I go to, a library or neighbourbood park I’ve been to or like yeah even if i don’t get a gun pointed at me in my life, knowing that shootings have happened in places I’ve been to is harrowing to know. In the US, it happens several times a year in many neighbourhoods. Compare Chicago and Toronto, cities of similar size and climate, one has 2726 per year shootings, the other has 461…
When mass shootings happen regularly, and knowing that gun ownership is ubiquitous (rather than largely connected to presumably illicit criminal weapons), active shooter drills are as commonplace as fire drills worldwide, it’s a structural fear, of course we’re not paralyzingly afraid all the time, but it’s built into peoples’ upbringing. The effects bubble up in other areas and affect overall happiness.
Rentlar@lemmy.cato World News@lemmy.world•Why are Dutch children the world’s happiest? A teenager weighs inEnglish381·12 days agoIn suburban North America… steps outside you have nothing but roads with cars going 50km/h+, no shops or cafes to walk to because of zoning laws, maybe a small park a 15 minute walk away.
You have to have your parents take you places, you cannot go anywhere alone. In the USA you also have to worry about potential shooters because people play fast and loose with gun laws there.
Good reporters only talk about how Trump is such a gweat wittle pwesident.
