  • Most of the container potato setups I see use a lot of sand and straw which I thought would help with the fungal growth, though they’re usually set up in something like a large trash can with an air layer of insulation around since it hold heat less than rocks but the white block idea with sunken drip line sounds intriguing. We get a lot of clay in my area, but it’s also pretty rainy most of summer so I would probably need some sort of sensor in the soil to figure out when it’s dried enough for more watering. Thanks for the response!

  • I have a tiny yard in the south and it’s pretty much paved so container is the only way I can go until (if?) I manage to buy a house with a plantable area. Currently have some citrus in containers producing, a bunch of basil, tomatoes, and some various sprawlers like squash. I wish I had the space to put them all in the ground but I gotta work with what I have. Usually use heirloom seeds or hardware starter plants but gotta pick varieties that are good for containers so I don’t get that many options. I figured that potatoes would still be productive in the seasons when tomatoes aren’t growing on the branches due to heat or cold but I could be wrong since i’m still learning a lot.

  • Have you tried a grafted cherry tomato/white potato plant? I’ve been looking at trying it out just because growing two produces with “one plant” seems really interesting to me and I’ve read a bit about how they’re closely related enough that you can graft the tomato to the top of the potato plant.
Also trying to get more people into container gardening and it seems like a good space saver.

  • I didn’t even take it as satire on that, I thought it was just a weeb version of plane waifus and while I don’t understand it I also am not threatened by accepting it may be a reality for some people. If someone wants to identify as an anthropomorphic attack helicopter because they want a helicopter waifu… I don’t understand but I don’t have to to chuckle a bit and move on with my life. I don’t know if that is a healthy view (mine) but it doesn’t make me think of them as less human anymore that someone who likes pineapple on pizza. Sorry for the ramble, let me know if I’m off or missing something.

  • “Lemmygrad doesn’t seem to be a very friendly instance unless you have those specific political loyalties, and it seems self-isolating as well to an extent, I just want to foster a culture of not letting anyone control what you see or what you can say, and also a culture of accountability and feedback. I just think thats what makes communities alive and good.”

So do that. Create your own instance. Here you’re just complaining that the people in this instance don’t have the same opinion towards fostering open lines with asshats.

  • I’m talking about the fediverse since tech has advanced quite a bit from when email was first starting up which has increased the capability of trolls to cause problems.

As for why you should help out, you’re the one demanding access to a community that has set rules and doesn’t have the tools to enforce it exactly the way you want so… Maybe step up and stop complaining so much? How is it such a crisis that a community closes it’s gates? It’s likely not permanent and can be reversed when said mod tools reach the usability needed.

  • In another example, cell phone companies allow users to keep their number and call anyone on any service.

However they also have laws to block people who use that accessibility to troll others (spam calls).

You’re expecting an open sourced, volunteer network to have the same controls as private companies with departments dedicated to keeping these issues in check. Your analogy does not work.

In your country example, each country has users verified (passports) and travel between two countries is not allowed without proof of their verified identity which comes with other controls for restricting individuals on a case by case basis as they break the laws of the country they immigrate to. Lemmy does not have those tools yet, so until they do the point is moot. How about you help create those tools since you view the current status as such a travesty?

  • Ah, I was even thinking just a profile for each instance.

Like one instance ticks the “users need verification” like beehaw vs “free entry” like sh.it just.works, or political leaning restrictions like tankies/no tankies so that each community can better decide which instances to federate with based on their values. You could either have them set by the mods or through community vote so that each instance has the chance to develop more organically with users able to find instances they likely will match with.
