As we unearthed information about new incidents, we filed FOIA requests for related records. In response, we were often told that, unless we could provide names, especially those of the perpetrators, agencies couldn’t carry out searches for documents. When we provided names, some departments refused to release records, citing the privacy rights of the people we had identified. We learned that many cases were handled nonjudicially—essentially as personnel matters—and that those records were exempt from FOIA. Cases that ended in acquittal or dismissal were also exempt from FOIA, and the files often destroyed. Many of the most basic records that would be easily obtained in any civilian courthouse in America are beyond reach in the military-justice system.

I’ve interacted with this person besides in public. They are a real human, with real hopes, dreams, desires, fears and feelings, much like yourself. Perhaps by suspending disbelief for a moment and not bullying him, you may be pleasantly surprised.

You know what amazes me most about you? You’re mostly meet with vitriol from all sides, and remain civil, kind, and pleasant. Let 'em stand on your imaginary cape. You’re a real world model of behavior, and while you’re probably a good 10 years or so behind me in age, a role model not to let abuse and trauma drag me backwards. As bad as we have it, they have it worse. There’s a lot to be grateful for, and a lot to work for. I dream of a world united in making sure every individual has their needs met and exceeded. It can only happen if we stop fighting culture wars and level the field, consistently, without becoming complacent, and passing that value to our children.

I’m okay with taxing ultrawealthy billionaires and corporations out of existence, and giving them back the benefits of a well-fed/housed/clothed/educated/healthy population, of which they would also be the same.
