Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How to start off small with the intent to expandEnglish
3·21 days agoDo you research of raspberry pis, they are really great. You do need to be careful though, sdcards die comparatively fast, and you don’t want anything important to be on it when it does. Or at least backed up (Borg is cool).

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Not promoting hate speech but what happened to all the slights/slurs/vulgarity from like the 20s and 40s. There were so many. Now it seems well I can only think of three?
2·26 days agoI learnt recently that even the word g**** is a slur itself. Apparently it came from people thinking they came from Egypt. Their preferred name is Roma.

3·2 months agoGood to know, I paused updates on pocket casts now.
My dentist does it. I think it is fairly common to be done by a dentist in Germany.
The lemmings scrolled too greedily and too deep.
And regarding experiences, most towns are older than America. Where I live they recently celebrated 800 years of age. There’s a lot of history to explore.
It would probably be better to get experience ideas from your daughter, since the area will be oozing with history and things to see.
I live in Germany, if you have a specific question I can try to answer.
In general there are a lot of stereotypes about Germans, but most of them aren’t correct.
- Germans are efficient. Nope.
- Germans have no humour. Nope.
- Germans are unfriendly. Nope.
- Trains are on time. Nope.
Some are slow to warm up to strangers.
Many places only take cash still, though that is slowly getting better.
People do stare, not sure if that is specifically a German thing.
One thing that might be useful for you to know, coming from America. Many Germans get irritated by stereotypical American over sharing.
Be prepared to have your opinions on Trump probed.
Usually when you hear the typical ice cream truck songs in Germany, it’s a dude rolling around looking for old metal.

Europe@feddit.org•EU to launch age-check app as pressure builds on Big TechEnglish
11·6 months agoThey are probably talking about the AusweisApp. Which I have used precisely once for the novelty of it. In fact, I forgot it existed until just now.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Risks of self-hosting a public-facing forum?English
4·7 months agoThat’s always a danger.
You could host the server on its own vlan and use tailscale to tunnel from a VPS to your server. This way your IP isn’t exposed to the public. You can also add crowdsec or similar on the VPS.
I do the same thing with traefik on my dirt cheap VPS.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Will online only "Device Activation" become the norm for every device in the future? / Will everything require an app in the future?
4·9 months agoI’ve heard a lot of good things about reolink cameras on self hosting communities. But anything that supports rtsp will likely be ok.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Taildrop is very convenient for sharing files between servers/devicesEnglish

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•how do I show a coworker that I care about her after her mother died?
5·10 months agoYou could ask her about her mother. Talk about fond memories.
Losing your mother is hard. This year it will be 5 years for me.
Letting her talk about her might be a good emotional outlet. It might make her cry more, but that isn’t a bad thing.
It always hurts to talk about. But I do feel better when I can share a bit of her life.
You need to have that kind of friendship where it wouldn’t be strange. If you only nod to each other at the lunch table, then perhaps just leave it.
