  • Realistically, it’s only a matter of time until Steam becomes as enshittificated as any other services. There is profit to be made from Steam selling advertising space and customer data. They can either choose to capitalize on the profits that are in front of them, or allow another company to and take that capital from them. For a business it’s not a matter of what’s right and wrong anymore but consume or be consumed. If Steam isn’t willing to do that someone else will be willing to play the long game and do it. Then it’ll be only a matter of time until Steam gets acquired by another company and then it’s game over.

  • Actually, maybe? Meta is an example of an arbitrary trademark. Meta is a word in everyday usage, so it becomes a lot more difficult to defend than say Kodak which isn’t a word and is an example of an fanciful trademark. Could cooperate stooges take them to court and throw so much money at them they can even make a defense, of course. This is America were talking, cash is king and country. It just wouldn’t be very easy.

  • Legitimate question, maybe it’s because the practice of conscription is rooted in patriarchy? The idea that a group of men with superior social power forcing men with inferior social power to fight and die for them seems to be very patriarchal to me. With that lens it makes sense why women aren’t conscripted, it’s not their job. Maybe their job is to be the prize for the victor…? That’s dark…

  • You’re absolutely right, to add a bit more depth to the conversation, providing a home is the first step. Those homes need to be dispersed throughout a whole community so no single neighborhood has to handle the influx. As opposed to project housing. They need to be near services like welfare, public transportation, food banks, etc, and occupational opportunities to break the cycle of poverty. In many places that means a job but it doesn’t necessarily have to be.

I think the cause of all this is simple, a system where ultimately your only value is the wealth you generate instead of valuing the person we all are. I also think that the solution will be complicated. I’ve been fooled too many times by the simple solution to fall for it here.
