We have all processed and dealt with the trauma of losing millions of people including friends and family and half of our country actively denying it and gaslighting us. And we’ve also had therapy and really healed from having the curtain of capitalism yanked back and seeing the reality and then just going “back to normal” and pretending everything is fine and we definitely aren’t ignoring the exploding inflation & housing cost & food cost, stagnant pay, while watching a belligerent narcissistic racist sexist conman felon still be close in the polls for president despite using a global pandemic to cash in some gains at the cost of our lives, attempting a coup and countless other horrific activities. And the planet is on fire and we could stop it, but a few people REALLY want to get a 7th yacht and go to space for fun so we’re gonna do that instead. And that’s fine. Did I mention we’re all being exploited for our labor and getting less than enough to live on in return? And AI is about to fuck up all our shit because we aren’t prepared. And it could be amazing and do a million tedious tasks people do and let us all have more free time, nah let’s let corporations exploit that too and throw us under the bus as they speed by with all the benefits we made for them. And did I mention we are still arguing over the conman felon narcissistic loser that swindled our entire country to benefit himself and his buddies and got millions killed and whether or not we want him in charge again, or the person that has a plan and wants to make things better for us all. Not sure, still undecided. Oh, and today is 9-11, the day our whole country mourned the loss of ~3000 people in a tragic event and 20 years later we were losing that many and more daily to a virus, but it was “just a hoax”, now get back to work! We need to break our record profits this quarter for the shareholders!

I agree with you all the way up to voting 3rd party.

It has never worked out how everyone thinks it will. Why would this time be different?

We have first past the post here. Meaning first across the finish line. And 2 candidates are neck and neck a few steps from it. You can vote for one of them to pull into the lead a bit OR you can vote for a person still standing at the starting line that has no hope to ever win.

It’s wild to me that people don’t see that. It’s about keeping Trump from winning and ACCELERATING THE GAZA GENOCIDE!!! There just simply isn’t the momentum to elect a 3rd party right now this cycle so close to the end. You have to start that momentum and push WAYYY sooner and be competitive and stay close to the lead or it is over for you.

Voting 3rd party now is like sticking your head in the sand and ignoring reality.

I completely understand that neither main candidate is perfect.

If Trump wins, but your vote could have helped Biden win, how will your conscience handle that? Knowing you could have at least stopped Trump, but didn’t? Is feeling good about your vote going to outweigh the reality if Trump wins?

It’s like refusing to put out a fire with dirty water so you let the whole building burn down. Let’s use the dirty water and stop the fire and THEN clean up the muddy mess from it.

I’m not taking sides really, but I just want to point out that the US very much DOES still do shit to bipoc communities regarding infrastructure and construction and housing.

They will run a new highway right through a neighborhood. And sure, they offer to buy up the land first usually, so that’s nice I guess, but they don’t pay well for it and if you don’t move they just take it anyway. Rail lines run through lower income areas. Highways too. There are “easements” and “imminent domain” legal fuckery that they use against bipoc people mostly too. If it’s a rich neighborhood they go around, if it’s poor people tough luck to them.

Residential can also get rezoned to commercial and force everyone out.

There are LOTS of legal and quasi legal things that are done all the time here. But even the legal ones are often ethically/morally wrong.

So there’s that.

In years past, CBC (Canada) had a very nice website with schedules and the videos of full events all organized by event. I don’t recall the coverage being overly edited or filled with fluff commentary or only covering the “big” names/events, but seemed pretty broad and unbiased and boring-in-a-good-way. It was really nice. Highly recommended.

A simple VPN to a Canada exit point is all you need. And I guess a plugin or script to download the videos if you wanted them offline. But since you can browse to any event on any day and watch when you want you really don’t need to download anything.

Just like “nothing changed” when Roe was overturned? Got it.

So many people keep arguing past each other on this because there are 2 truths and each side sees their 1 truth as the end-all.

1. Genocide is bad. Biden isn’t doing enough to stop Israel. But, Trump would accelerate it. And also do more genocide here too.
2. We have a FPTP voting system meaning the first candidate across the line wins, so you either vote for A or B. If you abstain from voting or vote 3rd party it does not make any difference whatsoever to the outcome because it is still who crosses the line first. So you have to decide which of the 2 you want, or which of the 2 you DON’T want. And vote accordingly.

Everyone declaring “Genocide Joe” and voting 3rd party is missing the point that doing that could let Trump win. And that would be FAR worse.

And everyone declaring “Blue no matter who” and demonizing the people that want the genocide to end are missing the point that our system is fucked and does not represent us and both candidates are bad. Both candidates are right wing and our country WANTS someone on the left that represents the people, but we simply don’t have that.

Yeah for real.

But yeah, I guess at its core, human intelligence and machine intelligence are both just pattern recognition, but I guess my point is that calling it “AI” gives people this false sense that it is something it is not. AI has been a thing in Sci-fi for so long that we all think of Data from Star Trek or C-3PO from Star Wars and similar. When in reality it is more akin to a robot arm in a factory doing the same task really fast and really precisely, but it isn’t some adaptable all-purpose thing yet.

I really hate that we are calling this wave of technology “AI”, because it isn’t. It is “Machine Learning” sure, but it is just brute force pattern recognition v2.0.

The desired outcomes you define and then the data you train it on both have a LOT of built-in biases.

It’s a cool technology I guess, but it’s being misused across the board. It is being overused and misused by every company with FOMO. Hoping to get some profit edge on the competition. How about we have AI replace the bullshit CEO and VP positions instead of trying to replace fast food drive through workers and Internet content.

I guess that’s nothing new for humans… One human invents the spear for fishing and the rest use them to hit each other over the head.
