BRASILIA, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has requested a phone call with his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva amid tensions over a contested election, a Brazilian source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday.
The news was first reported by local TV channel GloboNews. No date has been set for the call, according to the source.
It is traditional for election winners to receive congratulatory phone calls from the leaders of other countries after winning an election as a sign of that country accepting the vote.
The US and European leaders not calling is a sign they disagree with the election results. That Lula hasn’t called is probably a much bigger deal to Maduro’s legitimacy.
