The call, an apparent imitation or digital manipulation of the president’s voice, says, “Voting this Tuesday only enables the Republicans in their quest to elect Donald Trump again.”

You’d be surprised. Democrats are already less likely to vote than republicans are. There is a lot of “my vote doesn’t matter so why bother” rhetoric among poor democrats.

Exactly. Yosemite has said they have a hard time coming up with bear-proof trash cans just because “there is a considerable overlap between the intelligence of the smartest bears and the dumbest tourists,” and those dumbest tourists who can’t figure out a trash can vote.

Seems like the vast majority of voter fraud crimes surrounding the 2020 election were engineered by Republicans. In my neck of the woods, all three caught voting with dead relatives’ ballots were registered as Republican. Two ladies ® thought they could register as their non-voting kids, and wouldn’t have been caught except that the kids decided to vote. The sole Democrat was a guy who provisionally voted while he was still on parole.

Nationally, all the big vote tampering was done by Republicans.

I would hope that if people are voting for Biden that they are smart enough to not fall for these kinds of things. I could definitely see Trump supporters falling for something like this if Donald Trump called them, but I hope that Biden supporters are a little smarter.

It starts… This will be the year to decide if we can have functioning information systems and safe, democratic elections in the emerging age of easy AI manipulation.

It’s a bad sign that there are no widely, commercially available free tools (from governments or otherwise) to help us confirm the validity of these things. We likely need something as ubiquitous as “googling” to stand against the incoming avalanche of truly fake information.

There will be elections across the globe this year to truly test humanity. I’m hopeful, but I fear we aren’t close to ready. Think about what you would do if you suspected a political manipulation was AI generated today? That’s one aspect, and you’re on Lemmy so you’re likely a bit more capable with technology generally (and you probably still don’t know what to do). Now, think about your grandmother in Milwaukee… what will she do?

I think this is the reason:

New Hampshire holds closed primaries, which means Democrats and Republicans can only vote in their own party’s primaries. But independent voters, those who are not affiliated with either party, can vote in either primary — and they make up nearly 40 percent of New Hampshire’s electorate.

I think it’s a tragedy that we let people who are borderline retarded cast ballots at all.

You deserve to get lambasted for that. That’s a horrible thing to say.

The very core of democracy is the idea that individuals have the right to make choices in how they live their lives, and that the power to govern derives from the consent of the government. What you’re saying is that there’s an arbitrary line of intelligence below which you don’t accept someone’s ability to consent, and you deny their right to make choices about their lives.

I think that’s the tragedy here.

Wishing for something to be the way you want, does NOT make it the way you want. Calling someone a bigot for telling you factual information just shows how brainwashed you are.

Here’s the same with restriction on owning firearms:
            https://everytownresearch.org/rankings/law/mental-health-prohibitor/

We CAN, and ALREADY DO restrict the voting rights of those who fail to pass a certain bar of intelligence and or mental continuity.

            And as for retarded:
            https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/11/AR2010021103896.html

The term “mentally retarded” was itself introduced by the medical establishment in the 20th century to supplant other terms that had been deemed offensive.

By the 1960s, “mental retardation” became the preferred medical term, gradually replacing previous diagnostic standards such as “idiot,” “imbecile” and “moron” – terms that had come to carry pejorative connotations.

The term “retardation” was common in my home and life, but it was sterile and clinical.

So how about you educate yourself some…

              No, man.

You came in here posting absolutely disgusting ableist slurs and spewing discriminatory bullshit that’s not true. Then after you get called out on it by everyone, you’ve start changing your tune, cherry picking specific circumstances that if that had been what you originally said, we’d have ended up in a different conversation. But instead we’re having this garbage conversation that you decided to start.

And as for “hey look, people used this word in the 60s all the time!” I’ll point you to every other slur, whether ableist, racist, sexist, or whatever. You know what? People used them all in the past with impunity. That doesn’t make it ok to use them today.

Instead of just Googling things that support your prejudice and confirm your existing biases, try searching for the counterarguments.

I didn’t change my tune at all, this is exactly what I was referring to, but you kneejerk reactionaries decided I was being “not nice” and that was good enough reason for you to dismiss me. “Ableist” is just another way for you to claim victimization, because that’s all the internet is now. Everyone rushing to claim victim as fast as possible because that justifies any action they take. It justifies not actually holding a discussion, because you’ve been “wronged”.

Grow the hell up and actually discuss the topic at hand, instead of attacking the person, their characteristics, and which “team” you think they play for or ulterior motives they have. All of lemmy is populated with you victimization weirdos like it’s some sort of fetish you have to be persecuted.

The original point I made, was that our democracy is at stake if some simple robocalls to idiots, morons, and retards can change the course of our nation. Robocalls don’t have to come from other US Citizens, so allowing this is tantamount to allowing other nations to control our voting.

Mods here will keep deleting my PERFECTLY valid argument, because they dislike the TYPES of words that I use. It doesn’t make my argument less valid. In this particular instance, I am referring directly to intelligence and its hand in the direction of our governing. Intelligence isn’t something I am “discriminating” against here, I am using it in a technical sense to describe the problems that it comes with. But you can’t see the fucking forest for the trees.

NORMAL people have these discussions on the daily. They don’t just turn around and walk away because someone said “retard”. Grow a thicker skin for fucks sake you absolute child.

                  The original point I made

The only point you’ve made is that you’re a bigot who is not interested in honest discussion. And you keep making it by repeating the same bullshit.

Grow a thicker skin for fucks sake you absolute child.

Says the guy whining about mods deleting his content.

I’ll hand it to you – you’ve put on a masterclass-worthy performance of a bigot having a breakdown because nobody takes him seriously. You’ve blamed me, you’ve blamed the mods, and you’ve blamed lemmy. The only person who hasn’t done anything wrong here is you.

When everyone in the world is giving you problems, it’s time to consider that maybe you’re the problem. And if the users and mods on lemmy are too harsh for you, then maybe you should go back to Truth Social or wherever the big-brained adults like yourself hang out.

To clarify a point I don’t think the people replying have specifically pointed out enough already: this line of thinking is contrary to a representative democracy. If some people aren’t worthy of voting, then they aren’t worthy of being represented by their government (e.g. slaves, felons, children). That’s the main disagreement I have with that idea.

If you truly believe there’s a measurable line for intelligence/competence below which people shouldn’t vote, are you worried there are so many people in that group that it would affect the outcome? If that’s true, then don’t they deserve representation? This problem is solved if everyone votes. Shouldn’t we just try to educate people instead of creating another marginalized group?
