I know this is number 123 on the list of bad things about nazis, I have a relative who spent a less than enjoyable holiday in Dachau during the war, but it really annoys me how they’ve all co-opted Norse/Viking mythology and symbols.
There’s this webshop in Sweden which sells really cool rune and viking crap. Really nerdy stuff, I think owned by one of the guys from metal band Amon Amarth (who AFAIK are not racist), also made stuff for the show vikings.
But 9/10 people wearing their stuff or stuff like it are far right. It’s really annoying. I like Viking stuff. It’s really cool. I’m a big guy, do a bit of weight lifting, so I can pull it off. But I really don’t want to be associated with weird weedy incel racists living in trailers.
Can confirm Amon Amarth 100% not white supremacists, they have spoken out about how much they utterly despise they appropriation of their cultural heritage for racist purposes.
Buying their merch is super tricky as a white dude who lives in New England. Was at their show recently and most of their shirts have giant Mjolnir on them, and YOU and I know it isn’t being used by racists, but a random on the street wouldn’t 😅. Did end up with a rad hoodie with stylized Geri and Freki though.
The co-option classical and ancient Western culture sucks but it’s pretty typical of fascism. It’s even in the name. I’m interested in fitness, Hellenistic culture and history, Western mythology and philosophy, Jungian psychology, and YouTube think pieces. It’s extremely hard to find videos on these topics that aren’t actually being produced by crypto fascists.
I can see how that would be a problem.
If I watch any kind of documentary on youtube, it’ll inevitably start serving up pseudo-intellectuals and crypto-fascists.
The comment sections are inevitably very culty too. Pretty scary stuff, because that’s a very effective way to convince the unaware that the charlatan they’re watching is actually a great thinker.
Important to stay (self-)critical and google stuff/people.
