Comping the kernel wasn’t so bad on Gentoo. I hated compiling OpenOffice on a P4 1.6GHz…

This is what I love about Linux - always learning new things!

I enjoyed using a MBP for a few years, mostly for the trackpad. I eventually grew too annoyed with the desktop crashes and iCloud bloat though. I built a new Linux workstation last year, and it just feels like home 🐧.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is anyone else not feeling that patriotic for July 4?
3·4 months agoI find the bit about believing the lies we’re fed as somewhat naive. We’re all on a journey, and everyone starts in a different place, with unique foundations.
My current opinions vary wildly from those held 20 years ago. Change is a good thing, and I think it should be expected as the norm.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Driving a manual: is it difficult?
8·6 months agoDriving a manual is pretty easy, but it depends on how you handle failure. The learning process requires making a few mistakes while you become familiar with a clutch and shifting gears.
Also, I think it’s much easier to learn if you know what the parts are doing. Watch some videos on how it all works and what different RPMs sound like.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What OS should I use for self-hosting that doesn't require extensive terminal knowledge?English
2·6 months agoWell said and thanks for expanding on the topic. It’s great to get more information out there and give others extra perspective.
I find Haskell fascinating too - it really changes your expectations of programming languages!

2·6 months agoI’m not interested in arguing. You’re welcome to your opinion as well.
Multiple individuals noted the value of diving into non-GUI server administration, and I wanted to share a tool that could be of interest down the road.

23·6 months agoThe learning curve might be a little high in some regards, but you may want to try NixOS. There are quite a few services ready to enable and customize for self-hosting, and the design makes updating packages fairly simple.
To be clear, NixOS is not a “simple” solution, but it does work well for self hosting.

2·9 months agoTrump is doing nothing more than pandering to the oil industry because they want to export LNG from Alaska. Besides, American refineries are largely equipped to handle heavier crude - Canada is helping us out.
We only have a (very) small trade deficit with Canada if you include oil. Canada is subsidizing what we do import to help us out (you know - we’re supposed to be friends).
Don’t believe the b/s that comes out of Trump’s mouth.
