Discord is going public soon, so start the timer…
This has been my experience too. And then once one side does something in response to what was covered in their bubble, the opposite side has no idea why and is completely befuddled by their behavior.
I delayed it for maybe 10 years after they first started asking if I wanted to get them removed, then finally decided it was time about a year or two ago. The recovery sucked for a couple of days, but I don’t remember my bill being exceptionally bad (I think my insurance paid quite a bit though).
Don’t worry, you’ll learn your lesson before next time. Surely.
I was a “Reddit is Fun” user for at least a decade
The impression I had of the US election based on it was completely out of line with reality
I’ve largely switched to Lemmy for the past two years, but this was really the last nail in the coffin for reddit for me too. It’s an enforced echo-chamber and no longer a reliable source of information. It’s hard to notice how bad things are when the politics are leaning in your direction, but once you see it, you can’t unsee it, and it feels gross.
Lemmy is obviously pretty politically homogeneous too, but the difference is that I don’t feel like someone is trying to trick me. Topics and and sources are clearly influenced by the individual posters’ opinions, but it doesn’t feel like there’s a coordinated behind-the-scenes effort to push an agenda, which makes for a better vibe.
It’s the social media equivalent of supporting a bunch of Mom and Pop shops (or opening your own!) vs some hyper-sanitized, corporate monstrosity like Wal-Mart.
Of course! Why, what have you been reading?
I bet you excelled in your Literature classes.
I’m all for being accepting, but I’ll admit that reading about a guy that got himself sexually attracted to bartering did have me like:
And I still haven’t seen it somehow…
My kids are almost the right age to watch it at this point, so I’ll just wait until then.
Part of it seems to stem from people’s excitement to infodump about how federated social media works.
That’s relevant and interesting to learn about, but the average person just needs to hear “make and account here and start browsing memes” first.
Good luck!
As much as I consume memes, I’m surprised at how often I see something for the first time that everyone seems to have seen before…
Obviously women can also commit crimes against men, but its so much less common that I don’t have to take precautions to protect myself against them.
Yeah, I’ve never had second-thoughts about walking past some dangerous-looking women or checking over my shoulder to make sure some woman isn’t following me home. This is a regular thing that women deal with, and pretending that the experiences are anywhere close to equivalent is odd.
I view memes as more fun when they’re lower stakes, like retelling a joke someone else told you.
Thinking of it from a copyright infringement angle just feels so grimy and commercialized to me.
